How it works

From your numbers to a plan you can act on

Three steps. You can change anything later, and every change shows its effect right away.

  1. Start from scratch or bring your plan over

Answer a few questions about your household, work, spending, savings and Social Security. It takes about five minutes. Or import the export file from another planning tool.

  2. See your odds and your safe-to-spend number

Your plan runs across 1,000 simulated markets, month by month, with federal and state taxes. You get your chance of success and how much you can spend this month.

  3. Adjust with guardrails and what-ifs

Set spending guardrails, check a big purchase, move your retirement date or compare scenarios. See how your odds move before you decide.

What you get

Answers with the work shown

Each number comes with how it was worked out, so you can see why it says what it says.

Your chance of success

A Monte Carlo simulation runs your plan through many possible futures for markets and inflation. You see how often your money lasts, and the range your net worth could take.

  • Random markets, or reshuffled US market history from 1928 to 2025
  • Stress tests that replay hard years, as if your plan started then
  • Everything in today’s dollars

Spending guardrails

Guardrails turn your plan into a rule you can follow: the investment balances that would call for a spending cut, or allow a raise, and how likely each one is.

  • Guardrails in dollars, not percentages
  • How often a cut would be needed, and how deep
  • An email when your balances near a guardrail (Plus)

Ways to improve your chances

When your chance of success is lower than you want, the app tests changes on the same simulated markets and ranks them, so you can compare options fairly.

  • The smallest change that reaches your goal
  • Retiring later, spending less, saving more, another Social Security claiming age, Roth conversions and withdrawal order
  • Try any change on your plan before you keep it

Taxes, year by year

Federal and state income tax is worked out for every year of your plan from the brackets, not from one rate you guess. Then you can test the moves that change it.

  • Roth conversions and the room left in your bracket
  • Withdrawal order across taxable, pre-tax and Roth accounts
  • Medicare premium surcharges (IRMAA) based on income two years earlier

Features

Everything your plan depends on, in one place

The parts of retirement planning that interact, worked out together instead of in separate calculators.

  • Safe to spend each month

One number for this month: what you can spend while staying on track, at the comfort level with risk you choose. Retired or still working.

  • Chance of success

Monte Carlo simulation with random markets or reshuffled 1928 to 2025 US market history. Stress tests replay hard years as if your plan started then.

  • Spending guardrails

The balances that would call for a spending cut or allow a raise, in dollars, with how likely each one is.

  • Ways to improve your chances

Changes to retirement age, spending, saving, Social Security claiming, Roth conversions and withdrawal order, tested on the same markets and ranked.

  • Taxes, including Roth conversions

Federal and state brackets every year, Roth conversions, withdrawal order, required minimum distributions and Medicare surcharges.

  • Social Security from your statement

Enter the figures on your SSA statement and the app adjusts them for your plan. Compare every claiming age for you and your partner.

  • Target allocation with fund look-through

Set a target mix and compare it with what you hold. Funds are split into the US and international stocks, bonds and cash they hold, across every account.

  • Scenarios

Save versions of your plan and compare up to four side by side. Changes to your base plan carry into every scenario.

  • Can I afford it?

Check a purchase or a new monthly cost. See your chance of success before and after, and options if it doesn’t fit.

  • Advisor plan

For financial planners: work in your clients’ plans with the access each client chooses. Clients own their data, and each client household gets Plus.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is this financial advice?

No. Plot My Money gives you planning information, not financial, tax, or legal advice. Its results depend on assumptions that may not hold. Consider reviewing important decisions with a qualified professional.

Where is my data kept?

Your plan is saved in your account so it syncs across your devices. Only you and the people you invite, such as a partner or an advisor you choose, can see it. We don’t sell your data or use it for advertising.

Projections and simulations run in your browser. See the privacy notice.

Do you need my bank password?

No. You type in your balances, or bring your plan over from another planning tool’s export file. We never ask for a bank or brokerage password.

Can I export or delete my data?

Yes, at any time. In Settings you can download everything in your account as a file, or delete your account and its data.

How accurate are the numbers?

They are estimates. The plan is simulated month by month with federal and state income tax brackets, Social Security rules and required withdrawals, using tax figures from published IRS, Social Security Administration and state sources. Automated tests check the calculations on invented households.

Every result depends on your assumptions about returns, inflation and spending, and tax law is assumed to continue as written. Key numbers in the app explain how they were worked out.

Can I bring my plan over from another planning tool?

Yes, for supported tools. Choose the export file from your current tool on the import screen. You get a report of anything that didn’t come across, so you can add it by hand.

Can I try it without entering my own numbers?

Yes. Start with the sample household, a made-up family with invented numbers. You need a free account. You can switch to your own plan anytime.

How do I sign in?

Enter your email address and we send you a sign-in code. Your account is created the first time you sign in. Afterwards you can save a passkey for one-tap sign-in. There’s no password.

Can I cancel a paid plan?

Yes. Cancel anytime online in Settings, Plan and billing. You keep your plan’s features until the end of the period you paid for, then your household moves to Free. Your data stays.
